MMOs have a long and storied history, beginning as MUDs before transferring slowly into the behemoths that they were in the early 2000's and 2010s. But recently the genre has been suffering a string of losses. Games releasing don't live up to expectations, games we want get cancelled, and the constant creep of aggressive monetization and mobile games has derailed a genre that for a while seemed to be on the rise.

But those are plagued affecting the entire gaming genre. With releases like Redfall and Gollum, and with the failures of No Man's Sky and Cyberpunk 2077 not too far behind but then you have shining gems like Elden Ring, Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom or even games with promise like Baldur's Gate 3, Dragon Age 4 and many others.

The same can't be said for the MMORPG genre which has seen a long drought of success. Old games hold the genre up while new ones flounder and fail. So much is riding on Everquest, World of Warcraft, FFXIV, Runescape, GW2, ESO, and Black Desert Online among a few others.

Games that are well past their prime in some cases.

The genre has taken hit after hit with closures of promising MMOs, cancellations of much hyped titles like Project Titan and Everquest Next and games releasing with horrific monetization, a focus on mobile, or honestly being just plain bland or broken.

So why do we hate MMORPGs? Because we haven't had a win in far too long. The genre needs a win...desperately.

It leaves us asking a question: Why do MMORPGs suck? And is there any hope for MMOs going forward?
