Why England FAILED to end their years of hurt
For an hour or so on a dark, rainy conclusion to a July weekend: English euphoria.
Luke Shaw had zipped a perfectly timed half-volley in off Gigio Donnarumma’s post. Not since a collection of people thought it was all over some 55 years ago on roughly the same part of the globe had an England player scored a goal in a major international football tournament.
England had known glory since ’66, but only in failure.
Through the tears of Turin, through penalties and through Gareth Southgate’s redemption arc, England had returned to the precipice of success.
Football had its key in the door, it turned it in the lock. It was about to swing the door open to rapturous, eternal celebration: until Leonardo Bonucci’s equaliser and Gigio Donnarumma’s mitts ensured that football was diverted for a sojourn in Rome.
