Visual Description: A woman addreses the camera. She has brown hair and brown eyes. There's a light blue wall in the background.
Description: I wanted to explain why I, as an individual, prefer the word "Seamstress" over gender neutral terminology like "sewist" and "sewer". I'm female and I use she/her pronouns. When there's a choice between gender neutral terminology and terminology that reflects my gender identity, I prefer the terminology that is reflective of my gender identity. So yeah, I like "seamstress" because it is gender-affirming. I also like the word because as someone who sews but doesn't sew-to-sell, I need a word that captures that I can sew but which doesn't sound strictly or solely professional.
