Dispelling the Myth That Content Creators Must Have Super Flexible Schedules and Always Be Available
Visual Description: A woman addresses the camera. She's dressed in an 18th century-inspired outfit. Her hair's been curled and is carefully accentuated with an old-fashioned looking hairbow. She wears red lipstick and blue-rimmed eyeglasses that help her to see. There are two bookshelves filled with books behind her. She uses her hand movements, vocal intonations, and facial expressions to help communicate her thoughts and ideas.
Description: I feel like there's a myth or societal expectation that because content creators aren't tied to traditional 9-5 hours, that we must have excellent availability, and be able to stop whatever we're doing at a moment's notice.
I may be up at midnight my time, but that doesn't mean that I'm available to drop what I'm doing to go hang out with my loved one if I'm set up to record Wuthering Heights. Even though I may not be working during traditional hours, I still work.
Me having different hours than the general public doesn't mean that I'm automatically available during those hours. It takes time for me to setup my space to record. I take into account things like background noise, and adjust my schedule to avoid it as much as possible. If I'm in the middle of filming content, it's unreasonable to ask me to just drop what I'm doing and answer the phone for social chatter.
I think that the world would be a better place if people were more considerate of people with non-traditional schedules, including content creators, and people with other non-9-5 professions.
