The common belief is that the Earth rotates perfectly upright, but that’s not the case. Our planet actually has a slight tilt to its axis, and that tilt is responsible for the seasonal variations we experience.
Think of it this way: if you were to stick a pencil straight through the Earth from the North Pole to the South Pole, it wouldn't be perfectly vertical. Instead, it would be tilted. This tilt is why we have seasons in the first place.
You might be wondering, is it common for a planet to have a tilt? As it turns out, yes, most planets do. Mercury is an exception, with almost no tilt at just 2°, while Earth's tilt is 23.5°. The leading theory is that over 4 billion years ago, a Mars-sized body, known as Theia, collided with Earth, knocking it off balance. This impact also led to the creation of the Moon.
