Did you know that the Naruto series as we know it was almost drastically different? Well, there was almost a naruto story where Sasuke and Sakura never existed. If you only watched the anime you’d never know this, because Sasuke and Sakura both debut in episode 1, but in the manga they don’t show up until chapter 3 and there’s a reason for it. Kishimoto’s first editor Yahagi had to step in after chapter 1 was drawn and tell Kishimoto that he needed to change what he was planning, like having Kakashi show up in chapter 2 with a different personality where he ended his sentences in a verbal tick like Naruto says dattebayo. His editor told Kishimoto that Naruto needed a rival, which is why Konohamaru was introduced in chapter 2, but his editor pitched the idea of Sasuke as a cool rival to Naruto and Sakura as being a love interest to make a love triangle, saying that this dynamic would work better for pulling in readers. As Kishimoto would say in a few interviews as Naruto was published, the two of them had multiple heated debates, but 250 million manga sold later, it was the right call.
