Why This Game Is BETTER Than You Expect (*but...) - Detective Pikachu Returns REVIEW
Following the release of the Detective Pikachu movie, a loose adaptation of the 3DS game of the same name, The Pokemon Company announced Detective Pikachu was coming to the switch. And then, we never heard about Detective Pikachu for four more years. After that 2019 announcement, I just expected an enhanced port of the original with a new ending to match the movie, but to my surprise in 2023, well after the movie has disappeared from the public consciousness, out of nowhere comes Detective Pikachu Returns.
Revealed this year to an underwhelming reception, Detective Pikachu Returns didn’t exactly have the biggest hype train behind it, considering the ugly and subpar graphics, too much time having passed between the original and movie adaptation, and a general sense that this is not a release from Pokemon—the biggest multimedia franchise on the entire planet—worth investing time and money in.
So, is this game a total disappointment? In this review I’ll detail why it surpassed my low expectations, but at the same time, the ways it disappoints the Pokemon fandom. So strap yourselves in for a review from this cranky and aging Pokemon fan.
