So I decided to update my firmware 4.0.2 Wii U to 5.3.2 using the update on the Splatoon game disk. Updating this way is safe because you will know beforehand to which firmware you are going to update to.

Caution:
There are reprints so games might have an updated version on the disk. Make sure to pick up a used/old version.
