From the beginning, I was under the impression that the game takes place in space. However, it is an underwater research station somewhere in the Pacific.
Soma is story-driven, and it is very immersive. The machines speak, claiming to be human. It's even quite funny when Simon (the game's protagonist) argues with them, pointing out that they are not human (05:33). The machine, on the other hand, goes into denial, saying that they are flesh and blood humans and can even see their own hands. Sometimes I don't know what to think about it anymore. Are they real, and I'm just hallucinating?
The voice acting of the characters captures all this brilliantly - we feel when our interlocutors, and ourselves, are irritated or full of anger and determination. The fact that the robots talk about how lonely they are is thought-provoking. And that big guy that does not want to leave me alone! Give me a break! (12:33)
Is it just artificial intelligence, or are there really people in these machines? This question is difficult to answer unequivocally. We witness this drama of people who tried to escape to no avail. There are moments when we find people connected to machines like respirators. Unfortunately, we don't have a choice in such a situation. We can only disconnect the power from such a respirator to further progress (36:34). I wish we had a choice.
