William Wallace was a Scottish knight and military leader who led his countrymen in a war for independence against England in the late 13th century.
He is best known for his victory over a much larger English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297, which is considered one of the greatest Scottish victories of the Wars of Scottish Independence.
After his victory, Wallace was appointed Guardian of Scotland, but he was later defeated and captured by the English at the Battle of Falkirk in 1298.
He was subsequently executed in London in 1305, but his legacy as a Scottish national hero and symbol of resistance to English oppression has endured to this day.
Wallace's story has been the subject of many books, movies, and other works of art, including the Academy Award-winning film "Braveheart," which starred Mel Gibson in the role of Wallace.
