In Windows 8.1 the system goes one better than earlier versions of Windows. You can still press the PrtScn button to copy a screenshot into memory. Then you could use Paint or another editor to save the screenshot.

But in Windows 8.1, you can automatically save a copy of your screenshot simply by pressing and holding the Windows key and then pressing the PrtScr button. A copy of your current screen will be saved in your C:/User/user_name/pictures/screenshots folder.
