Happy Halloween!

We look at the Witch's Grave located in the Old St. Thomas Cemetery at the Old St. Thomas Church in Ontario. This is the most famous grave in the yard belonging to Maria Baldwin. Rumours began in 1970 that she was a mean woman and a witch, and that her gravestone was black due to fires lit by local residents out of spite, as well as every Halloween. Also, anyone who enters inside the 4 black posts that surround the grave would be cursed. It is also rumoured that there is a black cat that roams the cemetery since her death to protect her.

The reality is that Maria's grave is black from acid rain over the years and railway soot as the gravestone was made of white sandstone brought in from Toronto which was very expensive. This is a very porous material which can turn black easily.

Maria died at the young age of 22 in 1863 due to complications with child birth. Her baby died 9 months later and they are both buried together in this grave.

We also take a look at a few other iconic graves in this cemetery.

Thanks for watching!
