Sifton Bog is an Environmentally Significant Area (ESA) located in the city of London Ontario. it is home to rare carnivorous plants and much wildlife. Redmond’s Pond is in the middle of the bog and is gradually decreasing in size as the peat advances. In time, it will fill up with organic sediments and disappear. Today, only .2 hectares of the original 23 hectares of pond remain as open water. The rest is an acidic floating mat of sphagnum moss. Black Maple and Tamarack trees like to grow on this as well as some rare plant species. It was discovered in 1870. Sifton’s Construction Company donated the land to The Upper Thames Conservation Authority in 1967 and named it after the company. The City of London acquired some of the lands. Both now operate, maintain and own Sifton Bog. During World War 2, the sphagnum moss was mined for cotton gauze in hospitals. In Word War 2, Alder Buckthorn was harvested to produce gun powder. #shorts #siftonbog #bog #sphagnummoss #londonontario #lndont #hiking #trails #hikingadventures #explore #boreal
