Witchslayer Genesis: A First Crack Friday Early Look!
Astoria is a pretty normal town, complete with a fancy inn, a deli, an art gallery, and a sword said to have once been used by a Witchslayer. And a century-old witch's curse that turned the water in the forest into a poison that slowly rots away life...
Okay, so it has a bit of a history...
Witchslayer: Genesis is a turn-based RPG with a focus on an original story and fun characters with all kinds of personalities. It includes tactics-style combat, food and equipment crafting, a ton of sidequests, and, one day, a fully-voice-acted cast of characters. The story is unique and interesting, with a strong start before flashing back to the start of the journey of the main character, Alucard, as he accrues allies and tries to save his town while uncovering the hidden power of a long-untouched magical sword.
I had a blast playing this game. The focus seems to be much more on the story and exploration, and while I usually don't see it leaning that far into in games, it was really fun to get to run around and see a lot of the world without constantly getting into random battles. I really enjoyed the custom art that's been done, and I can't wait to see more of the custom character art, and having alternate costumes be available to players have some level of in-game customization of their characters' appearance is really amazing. I found the characters to be distinct from each other and well written. A few odd wordings and grammatical errors do show up now and then, but that's to be expected with a game that's early in development. The same sort of early-development things appear in the battles as well, because as fun as the tactics system is, the early enemies do a lot of damage if the player hasn't prepared with stat-boosting foods, and the fights are usually over before any tactics and planning can really occur. But, as I said, those are the normal kinds of things that'll be worked out as development continues. A few more tweaks with other things like creating a more organized layout of the swamp town and having carpets be more carpet-shaped, and I think this game is well on its way to being one of the greats!
