Before Etrian Odyssey, there was... Wizardry!
They are mainly dungeon crawlers with a side of brutal difficulty, especially the first few games which had odd coding, no maps in game, almost no UI! Luckily later re-releases alleviated some of the ancient CRPG ways.
To my knowledge, the PC Engine's release of the first game (compiled with 2) is the only version to have a more faster/peppy soundtrack.
(I didn't mention it in the file, but the composer is Miyoko Takaoka!)
