Wolfchild is a multi-system game released by Core Design in 1992. It features a varied landscape, enemies and collectable, and could be said to be a Metriodvania game on the Amiga. I take a long look at this to uncover some of its secrets.

Welcome back to our tour of Amiga games. At this point we are continuing with the second half of series 5, so you can expect at least another 25 shows. I've narrated about half of them, plus I edited about half of them already, but Im not really prepared to go for launch. I've had dental trouble of late, so my speech has been a bit shlarry. Luckily my voice has gone back to normal this week, giving me a chance to get back on track.

I took a break from the playguides for various reasons, mostly to do with getting a new position at Gracious Films. I've learned a lot about game capture quality in the past year, so you may notice the quality of Wolfchild is pixel perfect. This was also recorded at 1440p and at 60fps, which as as good as I can get on this system. The narration has also gone through some tweaks. It was originally quite bassy, much like the first half of series 5, but I filtered out most of it so that I sound a bit clearer and less muddy. This doesnt apply to all of these reviews, as a lot of the footage was recorded in 800x600 at 50fps quite some time ago, and some of the voice overs too.

I'd never got into Wolfchild until it came up in the Lemon Amiga games competition. I managed to have a few exploration tries, and also got defeated by the third world boss a few times, which was annoying. I came back to this game to record the footage the day after the competition round closed, purely to record my progress, not thinking I would get any further. From the elevator onwards its all new to me, so this is my furthest ever go.

I originally wanted to include the Hall of Light (HOL) maps in this guide, to show you the levels, but in truth I forgot. Im sure readers can look up the HOL entry and find those maps if they need them. The comparison zone makes a very welcome return, as this was a multi system release, but the audio takes a huge jump during this section due to a mistake in the edit - so sorry if it sounds too loud. I tried to get the audio to be normal at half volume, but I guess it depends on your system.

Look out for more stuff being posted for patreon backers soon - 4 hours of sampled music disks.

Danscore:
Wolfchild has some potential, with huge landscapes and quite a linear path from A to B. The music is quite quiet and the sound effects can be quite loud, giving the game an uneven sound mix. Graphics are good, but not as well drawn as the console versions. This feels solid enough, and much more playable than Strider, or even Assassin. Although there is something about this which feels a bit drab, not least because of the dark backgrounds. Perseverance leads to its own rewards, with exploration often leading to bonus health or weapons, making the game feel easier for veterans. At the same time, losing the long range wolf power ability can be a quick game over for newbies, as taking on enemies by punch power alone is highly risky. The first level feels like a trainer, as its over in about 4mins, while the second level feels like a maze at first and can be offputting. That said, this game does have charm, so Im happy to score it 7 out of 10.
