We were spoiled with many classic Point and Click Adventures on the Amiga, and this has to be one of the top favourites, along with The Secret of Monkey Island (why do adventures have to have long names??). Lets boot up those 11 disks and absorb that Indy feeling.

This was a game I remember from back in the day, but I cant remember if I had the boxed game or just the schoolware backups. I do remember feeling this was very interesting and deep, and on another level to The Last Crusade Adventure Game that I later completed (the Fists Path) on a 286 PC at work (my second job). I remember my mum took me on holiday in 1993 or 1994, and when the option came up for Crete, I jumped at the chance. At Knossos I looked for the Bull Horns and they are there, along with some half rebuilt rooms in the middle which you cant go in to, but look in through gaps in the walls. The tour I was on had 10 people - 9 Germans and me, so I got an exclusive tour in English after the others had moved on. I found the guide lady was very mesmerising, and she asked me if I'd like a private tour of the city. I was 17 - but as naive as a 7 year old, so I got embarrassed and said no. But something had awakened in me from that experience, and of course if I had the chance again I would not be so bashful, hopefully.

You might notice no end of Aspect Issues and technical issues with the review. This footage was recorded in March 2018 at 60fps, but instead of blowing up the material to 2440 at 60fps like I almost always do, this was rendered at 1080p but only 50fps, leading to jerky scrolling. I meant to play this in native NTSC, but totally forgot. In an effort to make up for this, I speeded up the footage in the early section to NTSC speed, so people get an idea of what it should have been. This made the audio crackle and sounds quite bad. I wish I had just gone back and recorded it in NTSC. In 2018 I was used to playing games using the Auto Scaling mode but without aspect correction - so the screen was stretched horizontally. For most NTSC compatible games, it means the graphics can be blown up to full screen and still look the same, so for this recording I stopped the video, switched off the aspect correction, and played the rest of it widescreen. I wanted to show the lush landscapes but not sure if people like this mode, and so I dont use it again for the rest of this series (maybe ever). Lastly, I spelled Atlantis wrong in the cartoon introduction. The final file was 5GB which took 2 days to upload. You could say this was spoiled by my pathetic brainlessness, but with the tight schedule I put myself on with these reviews, its too late to go back and fix anything.

Danscore:
Indy 4 is perhaps the pinnacle of Indy adventures. Each scene is very nicely drawn, and the atmosphere is unique. The iMuse music is also memorable in places, and I like how the game its broken up with arcade sequences like the Balloon ride. I feel most people go for the companion path, and it would have been better to combine the fists and wits together into one adventure, so that bare knuckle fights and chasing around the Monte Carlo streets in cars (like the PC version) was in the main adventure. With three separate paths it can make the game seem longer or with more replay value I guess. Some puzzles, particularly later, require some insight and help - like how to align up the random treasure location with the Bull horns at Knossos, and even giving the newspaper to the guy by the stage. Id say despite this, the game is of course a diehard classic, and much better than the real Indy 4 (shudder) movie. So thats why it gets a 9 out of 10 from me.
