Napalm is a Command and Conquer style Real-Time Strategy game from ClickBoom. It has great graphics, hundreds of units to control, and a set of challenging missions - both Human and Robots. So with quite a bit to go at, this game can take some time to get in to.

To go along with the fireworks this weekend, how this? I first managed to get this game to install in 2012, and I recorded my progress on the 'Top 10 Amiga Games You've Never Heard About' in December 2012. But having played the first three levels, I wrote it off and didnt play it again for another eight years afterwards. Then this year I decided to have another go. I loaded up my progress from level 3 and managed to work out how to complete the level. I was fortunate to take over one of the enemy facilities with my engineers, and after that the level was easy. Spurred on by this, I played on to Humans level 4, and still the game was giving me a hard time. It took a few more level before the game became a joy to play, and only after the medium vehicle factory had come along. Finally I was enjoying the game, and quickly made my way through the levels. The final few took a few tries, and looking for clues on the Longplay videos; of which every level has been recorded on youtube. The art of blocking off enemies with fake buildings is needed towards the end, and even then it took quite a few retries. Finally I completed the Humans and went straight on to the Robots; which seemed a lot easier, but then I was used to the game by that time.

The footage was clear on the screen, but quite poor when you look at the results. This is because I was using an old compression format, and more recent videos have solved this problem. The voice is also muffled for some reason, and so I hope this doesnt spoil things too much. The game itself runs in 640 x 480 mode, so whats how I played it (I think). Higher screen modes are slower and also smaller on the screen. Most of my time this week was spent adding arrows and things to make it a bit easier to understand. I didnt show an engineer taking over a factory until half way through the review, and I dont think I did a great job of showing or explaining the game, but hopefully by the end the average player should have a better idea of what to do.

Danscore:
Napalm is one of the last big AAA games to hit the Amiga, and needs some hefty machinery to run it. Its also inhibited by a steep learning curve which can put off casual players, and those who hate to read manuals. In this game the manual is essential, if only to memorise the various multitude of keys you need to press to accomplish the special tasks. For example, if you have a repair workshop, click on a friendly unit and press D to dismantle, the tank or aircraft will go into the workshop and get dismantled for a bit more money. This isnt vital to know but it can save some bacon if you run out of oil in later levels. Similarly, players need to know about setting Groups and also how to call them. Luckily the AI in the game is well done, so your tanks dont have to be prompted to open fire on approaching enemies, leading to fire and forget sorties and action all over the map. The first half of the game is difficult, but after the Medium facility and the airport become available, the whole experience becomes a joy, and back to how you would imagine this game to be from the screenshots on the box. That said, the Heavy vehicle factory comes along very late, and by then there are only a few missions until the end of that scenario. The action never slowed down on my machine, and the simple mouse controlled interface becomes intuitive. There is just enough variety in weapons and tanks that it stays interesting, and players invested in this game will likely want to see it through to the end. With two different scenarios and plenty of missions in each, this will keep you going for a while and eventually becomes addictive. Perhaps the best looking game graphically over its closest rivals Earth 2140, Exodus, and Dune II. Sadly it falls just short of Command and Conquer, but what is here is a very good and well programmed game.
