In this video, I discuss if the time has come to move on from World of Warcraft. As an online gamer who has been playing online games for more than 15 years since the FPS days of Unreal Tournament on a 56k dial-up internet connection until now, I find myself questioning if I should ever play World of Warcraft again???

Blizzard Entertainment very generously sent me a week free game time to invite me back to World of Warcraft. I played World of Warcraft from September 2005 until December 2013 with breaks in between. A solid 8 years in the game. During my time playing through the releases of The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria expansion packs I experienced every WoW had to offer. Earning more than 18000 achievement points, exalted in almost every reputation possible.

Now looking back at WoW I reflect on the mistakes I made and lessons I learned with MMO's which I have applied to play Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn:
1) Make friends - I could count my WoW friends on 1 hand, and I feel it very much diminished my experience of the game and I lived very much as a loner in-game for a long time. Do not do that, or you will just be wasting your time. MMO's are about the players not so much the content.
2) Admire the graphics when they are new - WoW graphics are release were great, especially given the scale of the game, the PC hardware available at the time and the number of players on screen at any one time. By today's standards they are very bad. To address this Blizzard are adding new animations to the new expansion Warlords of Draenor.
3) Pick a character and focus - It's tempting to keep rerolling but I recommend after more than 15 years of online gaming that you make one character in an MMO and stick to it no matter what, accomplishing everything possible. Rerolling just means you are replaying content that you have already done which prevents experiencing what else is added into the game.

Conclusion:
World of Warcraft is an awesome MMO, the original, the best, the greatest, it is just old which means I won't play it again. Younger, more attractive MMOs have come out since, so do not be scared to try them out. Blizzard has set the benchmark and standard for all future MMOs to learn from and aim for, and with the 'next-gen' generation nowhere, we are moving to the next phase of online gaming. Embrace it!
