World of Warcraft Midsummer Fire Festival and the Fourth of July - MMO Anthroplogy
HAPPY 4th of JULY EVERYONE
SUMMARY
The summer solstice is an important time in many agrarian cultures because it gave them a good gauge of how much time they had until harvest (which happens closer to the vernal equinox and the onset of fall). As a result, midsummer became a celebration of life and hard work--as more would be coming around the bend--and recognizing the winter would be creeping up eventually.
In the World of Warcraft the Midsummer Fire Festival is re-cast as a celebration of ancestral achievements, with fires lit all over Azeroth to recognize the achievements of those who came before and shaped the world. As a result, players are instructed to tour all of the virtual world to visit all the fires to receive achievements and accolades; some of these achievements involve going deep into enemy territory where it's possible to run into hostile players. There are several achievements that require the infiltration of enemy faction strongholds as well.
Included in the fire festival is a May Pole -- an interesting element of the celebration Beltane, a modern pagan fire festival set on May 1st -- instead of cloth ribbons, the pole lights up the player with ribbon of fire.
The festival in World of Warcraft ends near the 4th of July in the United States which is a celebration of freedom and independence from tyranny. Its celebration in the US involves the use of explosive rockets that light incendiary flares -- a long way of saying FIREWORKS.
Enjoy everyone.
