When you book a six-hour flight and arrive at your destination safely, you think life ought to be that simple. Like mishaps at sea, rail derailment, and road accidents, airplanes too have a fair share of risks. The worst is that some of these crashes are shrouded in mysteries despite the funds and effort to unravel them. These are the 15 most mysterious plane crashes ever!
15. Flying Tiger Line Flight 739
On March 16, 1962, a Lockheed Constellation took off with 96 soldiers and 11 crew members but disappeared forever. The military launched one of the most comprehensive search and rescue missions in the history of the Pacific but never found a trace of the airplane. The Flying Tiger Line, a military contractor, speculated that the flight was hijacked or sabotaged even though they didn't have evidence to back up their claims. Sailors aboard a Liberian tanker once reported having seen a fireball splash into the sea, suggesting that the airplane may have exploded mid-air. Still, there's been no official report of the disappearance.

14. Air France Flight 447
In the early hours of June 1, 2009, Air France 447 traveling from Rio de Janeiro to Paris went missing with 216 passengers and 12 crew members. It disappeared mid-ocean far beyond radar coverage. This dogged flight managed to fight for six hours before conceding and losing to the force of nature. After several agonizing days of searching, there was no trace of its remains. Days later, the wreckage was discovered, but the backup story was no less perplexing. The aircraft had flown through a thunderstorm, but there was no distress signal. It is even more surprising because the jet was state-of-the-art and expected to function optimally.

13. Egypt Flight 990
Egypt Flight 990 is one of the most tragic aviation mysteries in history. On October 31, 1999, it departed Los Angeles and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, killing all 217 passengers and crew. The Egyptian civil aviation authority blamed mechanical failure for the mishap, but the United States national transportation and safety board thought otherwise. They claimed that the pilot committed suicide as his last words were, "I rely on God." Why would he say that if something didn't go amiss mid-air? Conspiracy theorists believed that the CIA, Egyptian extremists, or Mossad took down the plane. Despite all the explanations, it is still unclear why this plane went down.

12. Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571
The Uruguayan Air force flight 572 crashed in the Andes mountain in 1999. Members of the Uruguayan rugby team and their family and friends were on board the flight. They had a lower chance of survival as the rescue team quit the search after only eight days. Some died immediately, while others died from the mountain cold. As days went by, the hope of survival was getting slimmer, and they lost hope of being found. The group soon began to eat the flesh from the bodies of their deceased friends and family. In the end, Roberto Canessa and Nando Parrado managed to trek out of the mountain and were found. The rescue team was able to go back and rescue 14 other survivors.

11. TWA Flight 800
On July 17, 1996, TWA Flight 80 took off from JFK Airport and headed for Paris. Twelve minutes into the ride, it exploded on the shores of Long Island, New York. All the 230 people on board died from the crash. Eyewitnesses claimed that they saw something moving towards the plane at the time of the collision, speculating that it may have been a terrorist attack. The most extensive investigation in aviation history began after this crash to unravel all that transpired. The government spent over 4 million dollars in the investigation, and 25 years down the line, there are lots of questions still begging for answers. Four years after the investigation, the NTSB released an official report stating that the accident was caused by a spark in the center of the fuel tank.
