There are over 8.7 million animal species on the planet. While some are fierce and cannibalistic, others are calm and friendly. Well, that's not the only classification for the animals that roam the earth. There are also some with bizarre features and behaviors but are hardly talked about. They're a blend of cute and terrific. I'm glad to introduce to you ten of the world's weirdest animals.
10. Wombat
When you see a wombat, you see a friendly little marsupial with a welcoming and calm demeanor. It is probably tempting to get close and hug them. Looks, they say, are deceitful, and this animal is one creature that drives home that point. Their rodent-like teeth are aggressive and can perform wonders when they feel threatened. They're also surprising in many other unimaginable ways. Unlike other marsupials, their pouches face backward, and their feces is cube-shaped.
To protect the habitat where they live, they dive into them headfirst and stick their rump. This act aims at scaring prospective predators and safeguarding their territory. You can find wombats in Diego zoo, but you'll see the best of them in the wild. Take a trip to Australia's Maria Island, where they exist, and find them hopping from one corner to the other. Aside from catching a glimpse of this rare creature, this island is also an exciting place to be.

9. Mantis Shrimp
Mantis Shrimps are fierce and ancient creatures that deviate from the usual shrimp behavior. Various forms of this species have been around for over 400 million years, but this one is so unique that scientists had to dig deeper to find more information about them. They're so strong that their appendages or clubs smash crab shells and burst open the clams. Some other species have appendages that are like spears and are as effective as the usual clubs. These clubs are also used to release 500 punches in one second, thereby releasing a force enough to break a glass.
That's not even all. This creature has an incredible sight that allows it to see two different directions at once. This skill enables them to strike with accuracy. There are over 400 species of this creature, with each of them having a multi-hued peacock appearance. You'll find them in Bali and the waters of Costa Rica. A diving expedition in any of these cities brings you closer to them.

8. Stick insect
Doesn't it sound funny that you may have seen a stick insect but didn't notice because you thought it was a stick? Well, this is the case most times. As their name implies, they resemble sticks; therefore, it is hard to identify them when you see one. They are named as the animal with one of the most efficient natural camouflages on the planet. They earned this feat thanks to their ability to stay perfectly still for an extended period. There are many varieties of stick insects. One of them is the giant prickly stick insect.
This species is native to Australia and boasts added features like thorn-like spines that allow it to blend with its surroundings. If you suffer from an insect phobia, you had better pray you don't witness them because they'll haunt you for a long time. At over 21 inches and legs outstretched, this animal is one of the longest insects in the world.

7. Axolotl
The axolotl is both adorable and weird simultaneously. Even though it develops legs, it never reaches land. Instead, it spends most of its time walking underwater. This is no wonder it is nicknamed walking fish. This extraordinary creature comes in cream white to olive color and is only native to Mexico. Yes, they choose to hide their unique selves in Mexico, so you can travel all the way there to see them if you want. They once numbered thousands and were a source of food for the Aztecs until their population dwindled. Another spectacular feature about them is that they have a unique set of external gills and can regrow lost limbs after being bitten off. The axolotl is one of the amphibian species that can live out its life successfully as a larva.
Your best chance of seeing them is visiting the lakes of Xochimilco. Habitat loss has contributed to population decline, meaning that they could go extinct if strict measures are not taken to protect them. I should also add that they are considered a culinary delicacy, thus making it more difficult for them to thrive.
