WoW 3.3.5 (WotLK) localhost Private Server (Linux, desktop launcher)
https://wiki.realmofespionage.xyz/games;linux;wine;world_of_warcraft_3.3.5
WoW running on Linux through Wine, with TrinityCore server emu self-compiled from source (not a pre-compiled repack), easy server updating and launching with XDG-compliant desktop launcher, with the shiniest tech available! (Fedora 41 Workstation, GNOME 47, Wayland, and even Wine-Wayland with renderer=vulkan)
I don't think this kind of delivery can get any better! WoW is packed in an isolated Wine prefix (using Fedora's system Wine; no fancy Proton/Lutris/etc and thus easily portable), TrinityCore structured in its own source and custom scripts folders, TC code pulled-in and compiled as-is cleanly; the latest-and-greatest code as-is right then and there, and tied together with easy-to-humanly-read scripts with as-limited scope and simplicity as possible to work virtually anywhere Bash exists (Ubuntu, openSUSE, Arch, even FreeBSD with minor tweaks). This beats any concept of a repack!
And the best part? I detail it 100% plaintext reproducible, for free right on my wiki! "You" can have this exact set-up right now. I encourage readers to take my notes as a base, change or make any improvements, and share them in the same spirit! (CC BY-SA 4.0)
I also have easy save data back-up on the desktop launcher. This dumps the authserver and characters full databases no-frills as-is as a sql file, and can be restored as a full dump MySQL and MariaDB different distros no problem (I've done it for a few years now). Both files are less than 200 KB single account with 2 characters and zip even nicer!
I have a Human Paladin level 30 and just got into Wetlands! Being able to casually quest (and actually read them; Darkshire is quite the place), not compete over resources, and just having no general sense of a time-gate is a pretty chill way to play WoW! Can't get any more legit solo-self-found than being the only player in the game world, and pre-Cata content has its charm.
Server updating requires internet access (to check for updates on git/src), but the server itself is fully local and it and WoW runs offline (Airplane Mode) no problem. On a bus with shoddy wifi? Fire this up within 20 seconds like nothing!
I have WoW on Linux and the localhost server as separate notes. My WoW notes can be used for other servers easy (change realmlist.wtf) and are easy to tailor for other clients/locales/versions. My localhost notes are specific to TrinityCore's 3.3.5 branch but looked easy as a base for CMaNGOS.
I'm using Wine as-is from Fedora's default repos (wine) that's Staging 9.15 currently. WoW is running in the video with winetricks graphics=wayland and renderer=vulkan with DXVK 1.10.3 and d3d9ex (notes below have details). No Xwayland!
