The horde used the Dark Portal to reach Azeroth long ago in the First War. Unknown to the orcs, Guldan had made a pact with one of the darkest forces in existence, the Burning Legion. On Azeroth, the legion's leader Sargeras controlled the mind of the last Guardian of Tirisfal, the archmage Medivh, by possessing his body while he was a baby in his mother's belly. When Medivh grew to be a man, Sargeras invaded his mind and began contact with Guldan in Outlands to prepare for the creation of the Dark Portal.
