Wreckfest is a combination between FlatOut, Destruction Derby, and the classic 1989 PC racer Street Rod, and is billed as the spiritual heir to the FlatOut series. The game has several game modes, including banger racing and demolition derby. Most recent racing games, such as Need for Speed or Gran Turismo, follow the same basic principles as this game. The player drives a car in a race or a demolition derby, with the objective of winning the race or being the only survivor of the derby. Before entering an event, the player must first choose a car, then either a manual or automatic gearbox, and then a dirt or tarmac track to race on. In addition, players will be able to purchase and sell cars, customise them, and conduct "research." There are three game types in this game: career, multiplayer, and custom events.
The races itself are largely focused on "vehicular combat," in which players must strike a balance between defensive tactics like avoiding debris or opponents' cars and more aggressive techniques like grinding opponents and forcing them out of the path to overtake them or escape injury. While Wreckfest's emphasis on physics and vehicle damage is similar to that of prior destruction-based racing games like Criterion's Burnout, it takes a slower, more strategic approach, resulting in a more conventional racing gaming experience than comparable titles.
