X-Men vs. Street Fighter (Capcom CPS-2 Arcade Intro and Short Demo)
1This is X-Men vs. Street Fighter....You'll Never See Anything Like This in the Whole World! Gotta love Tony Daniels' vocal talent as the announcer of this!
It was coming....and I took too damn long! Here we have the intro to X-Men vs. Street Fighter. This all came about in the fall of 1996 with a near arcade port on the Sega Saturn in 1997 and the PlayStation got a release (man was cheated on that one with the cutbacks and the slowdown!) in 1998
the 'hint' was kinda there with Akuma's appearance in X-Men: Children of the Atom back in 1995! The game features some of the Street Fighter Alpha cast and some characters from Children of the Atom in which Gambit, Rogue and Sabretooth made their debuts in the Marvel vs. Series and of course, the final boss....Apocalypse as Psylocke, Silver Samurai, Spiral and Omega Red didn't make the cut!
The gameplay is similar to Street Fighter with the motions but the unique selling point is the 'Variable Hero Battle' which actually uses elements from COTA and Marvel Super Heroes. This consists 2 vs 2 characters (as in a tag team) despite having a one-on-one battle in the beginning, the use of Hyper Combo Gauge which can be filled via attacks, Super Jump which can lead to an air combo titled 'Aerial Rave', 'Variable Counter' which leads to a defensive attack by your partner but the best element (or the crucial part) is the 'Variable Combination' as both characters from the same team use their Super Combos simultaneously!
My take on X-Men vs. Street Fighter is that even up to now, the game is still great. When I first played it, I was in awe of it! You would've never thought that this would ever happen but Marvel (90's Marvel where going by here!) liked Capcom's work with the previous titles and went along with it. The animation and gameplay is fluid and adding the voice overs from X-Men: The Animated Series was a great tactical move by Capcom's part.
Honestly, I was going to use the 'that PlayStation port' but hell, no! I couldn't do that to the wonderful people of YouTube!
