I posted a short video about this roughly a month ago. Since then, a lot has come up so I didn't have a chance to finish the project at the time. A few more hours with it, I got the results I was looking for and I'm completely satisfied with the look & feel of it. Now, I don't play Contra, but I'm confident it would pass the 'Contra test'. I did give it a whirl by pulling off some moves with Scorpion and he didn't miss a beat. Also played a bit of Donkey Kong Country 2 and had no complaints!
