XCOM 2 Ending

This video shows the ending of XCOM 2.
If you are confused as to the ending, it is because the developers intentionally made it hard to understand.
As to what is the creature that is crawling up from the bottom of the ocean at the very end, my best guess is that it is a Myrmecol (see UFO Aftermath / UFO Afterlight plot to learn more about such creature) and that such Myrmecol is what the Ethereals have been saying "will follow you." Just a guess though really, based on the fact that Myrmecols have been a key plot element in several UFO games, and that they are very much "all consuming" as the Ethereals state.
