Poor Cain. I'm not even sure what he did wrong. Actually, I've never been clear on where Cain lies in the good vs. evil spectrum: is he a bad guy, or just neutral? What is his motive? There's just so little with Cain. We barely see him do anything besides prevent the Gazel from using The Key.

And he dies for that, with Krelian declaring the killing blow. The Key gets used after this and all kinds of bad shit goes down. This is a turning point for the story, where Krelian is very clearly the big bad and nobody is going to get on his level.
