"The Last of Us" is the first part of a narrative that begins on the date of September 26, 2013. Joel Miller, a carpenter arrives home late at night to find his daughter, Sarah, sleeping on their living room couch. She reminds him that it is his birthday, and gives him his gift before going back to bed.
Later that night, Sarah wakes up from commotion and checks her phone. Tommy, Joel's younger brother, has been leaving messages and emergency phone calls. As Sarah searches the house for her dad, Joel suddenly arrives in a panic. A manic neighbor tries to attack them, but Joel stops them, leaving Sarah in shock.
It becomes evident that things are not as they seem, and the city (maybe even the entire country) is under some kind of outbreak that is affecting the humans. With no time left to think, Joel and Sarah seek to meet up with Tommy and do what is necessary to survive this sudden potential infection.
