Xin Plays: Dread X Collection (PC): Part 1: The Pay is Nice/Dont Go Out
For game 2 of October this year, i'm doing a whole collection of indie games done in a week called the Dread X Collection! I know, took me a while to get to this, since i've been quite interested in these collections. This is the lesser one, as the quality of these REALLY ramp up after this and set a really cool standard for these kinds of game jams that I really cannot get enough of. For now, it's a basic menu with 10 games, and with this part we take care of the first two at the top.
Now for each of these, i WILL give a more indepth review/opinion on each here in the description, as i kinda just go through the game without saying too much on how i feel. Video goes on long enough with each one, some games are short, some are pretty lengthy. But i will give my thoughts here so you know how i fully feel about each game and the effort put into them. Let's just say with these two, these would be the bar that we'll be hoping the games after do better then.
The Pay is Nice: There is a thing i like to call "Unity Games". No, i don't mean games made in the Unity engine. I mean a style, a look and gameplay feel, where you can look at and play a game and it would play like so... so many low quality games made in said Unity engine, a good lot of em using assets bought/stolen like mad. The Pay is Nice is THAT, so we're already on a bad start because it just looks and feels low effort. Perhaps this could've been improved by having something unique to contrast on it and give it something memorable and special, but quite honestly, this was just bland, boring and didn't really give much of a spook, with a cliffhanger ending that kinda sucks and a single rather difficult to figure out puzzle that has no purpose, whether you figure it out or not. The one spooky moment it DID have, with the masks, just felt forced and underwhelming to the point it was easy for me to make fun of it like i did. I'm sure their main game the dev is known for is better than this, but this was one of the poorer ones in the collection.
Dont Go Out: This has an interesting idea that i think has been done a few times, but the way it goes about it is... awkward and confusing. For one thing, some of these characters have VERY obvious weapons on hand... yet you never use them. They're just character dressing. Which is VERY misleading for anyone first playing this, like me, because i thought you could use the axe your starting character has. But no, you can do the opposite by just committing the dead on yourself as an option infront of the monster. This game basically takes a note from games like FNAF on progression: Just wait out the time til you reach a certain time of day and you'll win if at least 1 character is still alive. It's the same map too, and you only have about 20 cards i think, some of em character cards. It was confusing how some of them worked and whatever item the game gave the characters really didn't seem to matter much with this. It also doesn't help that as long as you have one guy in the cabin, with the door closed, you can just move up and down on the monster inside and you'll win without a single bit of challenge. The idea and look of the game is cool. The execution kinda sucked and left me feeling like this wasn't very thought out overall, like they had an idea on what the game COULD be, but didn't really think out the part of where it SHOULD be, and we end up with just a weird, short game that ends up a confusing eh.
...i know you can tell this first part is pretty negative. Don't worry, there are GOOD ones here where i'll be more positive, but the starting point is a bit of a bad one and again, this is currently the bar for which the rest of the collection should aim to do better in, and trust me, we do get some gems.
