Never really bought anything in the shop in the early levels. Guard mapper isn't needed in Lv 5.
It seems like you slow down if you have a lot of coins, maybe about 20? At least right before Level 7 the Move Faster item finally showed up & I bought 3. There's just no such thing as too much speed. Before level 12 I maxed it out.
After Lv 7 you lose those free mapper items & the warning arrow but you can rebuy them for 1 stage.
