Ye Olde Games: Monster Bash
It's been awhile. Sorry about that. It's October, so it seems like the appropriate time to do videos of horror themed games. This week, we've got Monster Bash, which was both developed and published by Apogee.
You play as Johnn Dash, a young boy on a quest to save his dog Tex, along side a plethora of other dogs and cats (because apparently nobody has any other kinds of pets in this world) from the evil Count Chuck.
The game is your average Apogee platformer, requiring some amount of level exploration to complete the stages. Before the exit is opened, you must rescue all the pets in the level by shooting the locks on their cages. This is where level exploration is required, as the pets are scattered all over the levels. Your weapon is a slingshot that shoots small stones which can bounce off of walls and ceilings. You can collect other types of ammo which will deplete with each shot, or be replaced if you collect another ammo type. There's a triple shot which will add a stone both above and below your default single stone, a boulder shot that fires a large rock that breaks into four smaller stones on impact, and a rocket shot which only fires when an enemy is on screen and chases them down.
The graphics feel rather bright and playful in spite of the dark settings of the game. Although the locations are places like cemeteries, caves, haunted houses, and even Hell in the third episode, the game never looks depressing or grim.
The audio accompanies the graphics rather nicely, coming across as playful as well, or even a bit mischievous with the music. The sound effects are all digital, although there is the option to use PC speaker instead. However, using the PC speaker will keep you from wonderfully cartoony splatter sound when you kill something.
Personally, I find Monster Bash to be a fun game and simple game (aside from the first cave level in the first episode). You can get it either from GOG, the 3D Realms website, or as part of the 3D Realms Anthology pack on Steam.
