Reflection Title: My Infinite Game

Book – The Infinite Game by Simon Sinek

Book Description: In this revelatory new book, Simon Sinek offers a framework for leading with an infinite mindset. On one hand, none of us can resist the fleeting thrills of a promotion earned or a tournament won, yet these rewards fade quickly. In pursuit of a Just Cause, we will commit to a vision of a future world so appealing that we will build it week after week, month after month, year after year. Although we do not know the exact form this world will take, working toward it gives our work and our life meaning.

Leaders who embrace an infinite mindset build stronger, more innovative, more inspiring organizations. Ultimately, they are the ones who lead us into the future.

Reflection:

I LOVE finite games.

Playing finite games with defined winners and losers has always been the one thing that never fails to get my juices flowing and mind engaged. I will play ANYTHING at ANYTIME! Whether it is my professional career in sales which is all about closing deals or not, tennis, monopoly, cornhole, pickleball, poker, debates, swimming, video games, baseball, or even basketball (I’m really short and can’t dribble well)… just issue the challenge and I’m in.

My life before this journey was dominated by finite games. That is how I measured my worth and time. I was either winning and making “progress” or losing and falling behind. The concept of an infinite game, one that has no winner or loser, is something that has never really had a place in my life up until these last few years of my life. However, these days, infinite games are all that really matters to me, and I’ve never felt more fulfilled.

Don’t get me wrong, I still love finite games, but these days my mindset has had a dramatic shift toward playing games that really matter to me and what will consume my attention for the rest of my life.

So, what’s my infinite game?

My infinite game is seeking balance in my life by performing as many acts as I can each day that relate to the values I say matter most to me in this world. In leading by example, I hope to be able to help inspire and guide others on their own journeys, should they want to play this infinite game with me.

My plan is to create an ecosystem dedicated to this infinite game of living a balanced existence in which we can make all of this possible and sustainable for the next 1,000 years to come. My Cofounder, Trieu, and I have lovingly dubbed this new world, ClubAny.

ClubAny is what emerged from my personal quest for understanding that was found blindly walking through the rubble of my life that was left after the atomic bomb that destroyed my previous world when Emilia passed away. Everything that mattered to me before that date no longer held any power over me. All the finite games that I used to play to pass the time before Emilia came into my life felt empty and meaningless. If I was going to go on, I had to find a way to make sense of what happened to my daughter, make her time on Earth have meaning, and in turn discover my own purpose in this world.

After all, if we aren’t here for purpose…what are we here for?

After I found this answer to my question, living my purpose everyday began to lead me down a new path where I ultimately found my partner in crime, Trieu. Since that day, Trieu and I have been hard at work on this infinite game of ClubAny, learning and exploring together, growing the mission, bring in more players, and having a blast.

If you want to know what Emilia and I will be doing for the rest of our days…come find us in our ClubAny universe where we will be doing our best to live our values every single day until we can’t anymore. From there, it will be up to the next generation to keep the game going in perpetuity.
