Reflection Title: What the Heck is LOS? (The Life Operating System)

Book – Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business by Gino Wickman

Reflection:
You might be asking yourself; how did a book about an Entrepreneurial Operating System called Traction make it into the Year of Magical Learning Adventure? I thought this was about exploring values, purpose, and overcoming trauma…where exactly does a “business book” about running a startup fit in?

Well, that is a great question and let me explain…

As the vision for ClubAny was beginning to take shape in the early days of the Year of Magical Learning journey, Trieu and I made the decision to grow our inner circle and try to find some additional support to help us operationalize and bring into reality what we were slowly dreaming up, something neither of us are especially good at. That is how we found our third Co-Founder in Nichol. Nichol is an operational wizard and we loved working with him and all the amazing energy he brought to what we were trying to create. Specifically, Nichol wanted to employ a method he is somewhat of an expert in called The Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS) to try and help us bring clarity, organization, and structure to what we were cooking up in our minds and conversations each day toward our mission of living a balanced existence. That is how the book Traction made its way into this journey.

While Traction may have been originally created to be utilized to organize and run a business, in a lot of ways, its methodology and practices can be used in all areas of your life should you apply a little creativity. At its heart, EOS is about understanding your mission, your values, your purpose and then using that clarity to guide the actions and key priorities you focus on as a business.

Now...that sounds a lot more like something right up the Year of Magical Learning’s ally!

As a matter of fact, as I was thinking about what I wanted to write today and share with you all, I started to see all the similarities to how I’ve been operating my life the past 2 years and the EOS model.

This whole YOML started by spending a TON of time figuring out my values, mission, and purpose after Emilia passed. This was the only priority in my life, and I refused to move forward in any direction until this picture was clear in my mind. Once I discovered felt I had a grasp on what was most important in my life, I then slowly began to build the activities of what I would do each day to align to this vision. This was accomplished in my morning meetings with God to decide if we were on the right track or not toward my mission of living a balanced existence. From there, I found Trieu and we aligned on the shared mission and started to use this framework together. Since then, we’ve slowly been filling the right seats on the bus with the right people as we try and scale this mission. This is exactly the EOS framework…only I’m using it for my personal life as well. Maybe we should start to call it the LOS (Life Operating System) :slightly_smiling_face:.

Hell, as I was thinking about the similarities, I even discovered that I had accidentally installed my own personal weekly L10 meeting by accident, and it made me chuckle. An L10 meeting stand for Level 10 Meetings. Put simply, they’re called Level 10 Meetings because people are asked to rate them at the end of each meeting on a scale of 1 to 10. The aim of a Level 10 Meeting is to fix any stucks that haven’t been resolved in your daily huddles. They operate at a more strategic level, ensuring the whole team check-in on company objectives and metrics on a regular basis, reminding everyone of their priorities.

I chuckled when I thought about the L10 Meetings as this is exactly what Emilia and I do each week as well when I go and visit her on Sundays at the cemetery. For the past 2 years, I’ve ended almost every single week of my life with my daughter at her grave. We get together and we talk about how we are living for 2. We talk about our values. We talk about our mission. We check in on the past week and visualize the week to come. We talk about our big projects, successes, problems, and struggles and how we can overcome them. Most importantly, I walk away each week remembering what this is all about and why we work so hard. This is bigger than me. This is bigger than us.

I always leave each weekly reconnect with Emilia recharged and ready to tackle the next week head on as I strive to Live for 2 in all I do! Now THAT is an L10 meeting in my book! Any time I can spend with my daughter is always a 10 out of 10 in my book and will always be the compass I use to guide my life.

Question: What is your LOS (Life Operating System)?
