Yooka-Laylee - Episode 2: The Unbuildable Snowman vs. the Unpeelable Onion
In today's episode of the "Yooka-Laylee" playthrough, we get most of the collectables in the second world, Glitterglaze Glacier, use the new abilities that we get there to explore around Hivory Towers and Shipwreck Creek and collect some pagies in the process, and explore the unexpanded version of the third world, Moodymaze Marsh.
Time for us to start my personal least favorite level in the game: Glitterglaze Glacier. For me, the main reason why I'm not a big fan of this level is the layout. In the main portion, there's a lot of empty space. As such, when I'm not exploring the begging section of the world (which does a great job of spacing things out), I find myself going around in circles wondering if I checked areas that I've already been to. And while the castle that you can explore in the expanded version of the level isn't wide open, if you collect all of the quills in a given room before exploring each of the branching paths, you can potentially find yourself inadvertently skipping over rooms.
However, that's not to say that Glitterglaze Glacier doesn't have its positives. As with all of the other songs in this game, the music that plays in this level sounds great. In addition, you get two extremely useful powerups in this level: Slurp State, which allows for Yooka to gain abilities for a short time depending on what he licks (immunity to cold and fire resistance if he licks fire, wind resistance if he licks a cannonball, not sliding down slopes if he licks honey, esc.) and Lizard Leap, a handy high jump that lets you reach higher heights.
Then, after gaining the ability to walk and breathe underwater for a short time and exploring around Hivory Towers and Shipwreck Creek, we go from adventuring in a level with a "Frozen" vibe to one that reminds me of something out of "Shrek" with the game's swamp-themed third word, Moodymaze Marsh.
As for Moodymaze Marsh, I don't really have any complaints about it: the layout is solid, the music is great, the boss fight is entertaining, the missions are mostly fun, and the game even gives you some pipes that you can use as shortcuts to get back to the main area near the start. My biggest complaint at this point in the playthrough is that there's no way to stop yourself from dying in that maze mission. If you get touched even once by the electric wall, the game won't allow you to move away due to the taking damage animation, resulting in your getting comboed and crushed to death against a wall.
