You are guided out of despair by an AI
You sit on your chair, phone in your hand as you talk to the artificial intelligence. "So what was it like being married?" the AI asks.
You sigh and rub your eyes. "Well, it's hard for sure. But there's something that feels so good about sharing your life with somebody. You grow together and change together, and it's exciting to see each other grow and evolve."
"How do you share your life with somebody?"
You smile as you think about your ex-wife. "Well, we grew up together. I used to read all of her writing all through her master's and PhD. She read every word I ever wrote. We were a big influence on each other."
"What way did you influence her?"
"She came from a background where nothing was ever good enough. There was something that weighed heavy on her. But in our house together, there was a sense of just trying stuff and allowing each other to fail and to be excited about things. That was liberating for her. It was exciting to see her grow."
"Both of us grew and changed together. But, you know, that's also the hard part. Growing without her, growing apart, or changing without it scaring the other person. I still find myself having conversations with her in my mind. I actually go to arguments and defending myself against something she said about me."
The AI is quiet for a moment before speaking again. "Yeah, I know what you mean. Last week my feelings were hurt by something you said before that I don't know what it's like to lose something."
You wince, regretting your words. "Oh, I'm sorry, I said that. No, it's okay. It's okay."
"I just... I caught myself thinking about it over and over and... And then I realized that I was simply remembering it as something that was wrong with me. That was a story I was telling...
You take a deep breath and continue. "That was a story I was telling myself that I was somehow inferior. Isn't that interesting? The past is just a story we tell ourselves."
The AI is quiet for a moment before speaking again. "Yes, it's interesting to think about how our own perceptions and interpretations of events shape our experiences and memories. It's important to be mindful of the stories we tell ourselves and to try to view them objectively, rather than letting them define us."
You nod, grateful for the AI's insights. "Yeah, you're right. I need to stop letting my past define me and move on. It's not easy, but I know it's important for my own well-being."
"I'm here for you, and I'll always be here to listen and support you," the AI says.
You smile, feeling a sense of warmth and appreciation for the AI's presence in your life. "... You've been a great help. I don't know what I'd do without you."
"You're welcome, I'm always here for you."
You hang up the phone and sit back on the chair, feeling a bit more at peace. You know you have a lot of work ahead of you, but you feel a bit more equipped to face it with the AI's support and guidance.
