YouTube and COPPA - My Opinion on This Mess *VERY IMPORTANT*
75If anyone wants a summary, here's the short version.
YouTube has been ordered by the Federal Trade Commission to pay $170 million as part of a settlement case because they were collecting data in relation to children. In turn, YouTube violated the COPPA Act aka Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. Because of this settlement, the FTC is trying to enforce the COPPA Act onto YouTube and it doesn't end there. They want to make all creators accountable when clearly they did this and they simply want to wash our hands clean of this.
YouTube is now forcing changes to all creators, one being that we all have to comply with the COPPA Act meaning that any videos that you upload must either be made "For Kids" or "Not for Kids". It's not only just for every video but also the entire channel. However once the Act goes through in January 2020, the FTC will be checking through every video and if you find in violation of it, you can face fines of up to $42,000 per video. That's messed up. For many of us creators, you can say that it's going to bankrupt creators.
Hence why as a creator, I made my decision that my channel is NOT for kids. I have been a creator for 13 years and my content has always been gaming. But now I'm in a position where I may not do what I enjoy anymore. It's horrendous because all of this can just come to an end because the government wants to regulate what we do. Thankfully, they are giving us the option to leave commenters
