YouTube Partner Program 2018 changes - A message to small YouTubers - A message to YouTube YPP
YouTube Partner Program changes for 2018 - A message to small YouTubers and a message to YouTube.
On January 16, 2018, YouTube announced changes they are making to their YouTube Partner Program (YPP). On February 20, 2018 all channels will have a new requirement in order to monetize their videos. In 2017, YouTube made it so you needed 10,000 lifetime views in order to monetize your videos. Now, they're raised the standard. As of February 20, 2018 all channels will be required to have reached 1000 subscribers and 4000 watch time hours in order to monetize.
When I got the email about this change last night, my first reaction was extreme frustration and anger. I was pissed. "How can they make it this hard??" Well, I have since calmed down a bit and realized that it really isn't that big of a deal. I also had a chance to chat with Draegast, my favorite YouTuber, and he mentioned that in order to reach 4000 watch time hours within 12 months, you need less than 300 views per day at 3 minutes retention. Not that bad once you break it down, really. But the initial shock upon seeing such a large number is too much. I really think that YouTube could have implemented this much smoother rather than a 30 day notice all of a sudden.
Message to YouTube:
YouTube, I really think you're trying, but not in the right way. Numbers can easily be faked. There's nothing stopping people from making extra accounts to increase subscriber counts, or putting playlists on all day while at work or school. Here's my suggestion to you YouTube - Instead of making it a straight numbers-only requirement, take a look at other metrics instead. Like upload frequency and average views/comments/engagement on those videos per day for each channel It might be a bit more difficult to look at, but it can't be faked and it would work so much better I think.
Message to small YouTubers & creators:
This is not the end of the world. It sucks and it hurts so much right now, but it will make things better later on. It doesn't even change much right now. In fact, now is the perfect time to spend your time improving yourself and your content. Make sure to focus on your audience because without them, you don't even have a channel. You need to make a connection with your viewers. If you can't make that connection, you won't have success. Improve everything else and learn about SEO, make sure all your metadata is descriptive, relevant and specific. Please don't give up. You will only prove their point with this.

Starting today we’re changing the eligibility requirement for monetization to 4,000 hours of watchtime within the past 12 months and 1,000 subscribers. We’ve arrived at these new thresholds after thorough analysis and conversations with creators like you. They will allow us to significantly improve our ability to identify creators who contribute positively to the community and help drive more ad revenue to them (and away from bad actors). These higher standards will also help us prevent potentially inappropriate videos from monetizing which can hurt revenue for everyone.
On February 20th, 2018, we’ll also implement this threshold across existing channels on the platform, to allow for a 30 day grace period. On that date, channels with fewer than 1,000 subs or 4,000 watch hours will no longer be able to earn money on YouTube. When they reach 1,000 subs and 4,000 watch hours they will be automatically re-evaluated under strict criteria to ensure they comply with our policies. New channels will need to apply, and their application will be evaluated when they hit these milestones.
