Ys Book I & II (TurboGrafx CD) - Casual Playthrough (Part 2)
Game: Ys Book I & II
Platform: TurboGrafx CD
Completed: November 14, 2020
Rules: Beat the game
Part: 2 of 3
This is a really awesome way of combining the first and second Ys games into one experience. Before I played this, I played through the Sega Master System version of the original Ys so I was pretty familiar with what I needed to do in Book I. That portion of the game was covered in Part 1. This video (and Part 3) cover Book II, which was mostly a blind playthrough since I hadn't played it in about 15 years or so.
Here are some highlights:
38 minutes, 26 seconds - This game really needed a way to skip text. In the cases where you need to talk to a statue or something to fill up but it forces you to read a slow fill of all that text...so annoying.
45 minutes, 26 seconds - I never found out what the Cleria Ring actually does. Quickness of a cat? I don't see it. The two bird idols (Idol of Hawk and the other one) in this game were the same way. I never figured out what they were for. I looked online after I beat the game and apparently one of them makes your fire magic homing but I don't know about the other. Didn't see anything about the Cleria Ring. I also got a Peace of Mind Ring that helps you relax? I don't know. According to the internet this reduces the amount of magic that spells cost. That would have been nice to know.
46 minutes, 40 seconds - I don't think you ever get to go through this wall. I even returned here later to see if anything had changed but naw. Dr. Flair says it used to lead to the Divine Area which you completed anyways so meh. Cool continuity though.
1 hour, 54 minutes, 35 seconds - I accidentally ran into an odd situation where you can actually have an enemy on an ice slope knock you up just enough to where you get past it. Didn't help me any here, but it was kind of cool to see.
1 hour, 56 minutes, 55 seconds - This part was crazy. I somehow got hit by this enemy which knocked me upwards and caused me to accidentally walk into this secret area which contained arguably the best optional item in the game, the Cape of the Holy Spirit, which gives you auto-heal. Wow! I don't know if I would have seen the very subtle hint that lets you know where this hidden cave was!
2 hours, 8 minutes, 55 seconds - About 7 hours earlier that day, I completed my second "Death Nut 2.0" spicy challenge. Right before this boss, I had to save and quit my game so I could pace around with a really painful stomach and throw up shortly after. But after that, it was game on! Thanks Johnny Scoville!
3 hours, 11 minutes, 45 seconds - It was at this point that I finally decided to seek out that mysterious "fourth magic" that I was missing. Obviously I should have had it by now since the fifth magic was already mine, right? So I went back to the beginning of the game and retraced my steps, talking to all of the enemies using the Transform magic as well. I did manage to uncover the Iron Ore that I had missed earlier, but it turns out that this game stupidly puts the fourth magic later in the game, and you just get to walk around with a gaping hole in your menu for a while. Why?
4 hours, 17 minutes, 50 seconds - This hint is very helpful, but as far as I know this room that contains the Sacred Cup is the only time in the game you have to use the Magic of Light (that you got waaaay earlier) to see the chest. The clue specifically mentions the Magic of Light so I guess it's fine. Since the magic has no description in-game and I totally forgot that, I just had to fool around and discover this on my own. At least the chest flashes for a bit as a big clue, but why it doesn't do that every time you enter the room is a mystery. And why does it do it in the first place if you don't have the magic equipped? That made me wonder if I should have been trying this magic in empty rooms all throughout the game since they give it to you really early. But I don't think you get anything else with it. Whatever.
4 hours, 27 minutes, 5 seconds - Here's the room I was just talking about.
