This is my entry for the Pixel Mixers January monthly contest with the theme "One-Hit Wonders" (i.e. games that aren't part of a series).
I later found out that YU-NO isn't technically a one-off game because when they remade it, they released a spinoff called 8-bit Yu-No's Great Adventure... but that's a digital download exclusive for first-run Switch copies of the game and it can be finished in less than an hour, so Psycosulu gave me permission to enter this piece in the contest.

I don't know much about visual novels, but the original YU-NO had a big impact on the genre when it came out in 1996 (the original Japanese version was an 18+ eroge, and the remake is rated M). I played the remake last year and I've got some mixed feelings about it, but overall I enjoyed it. One of the main features is a branching timeline that you can move around, which probably influenced narrative systems in later games like Tactics Ogre (PSP) and Radiant Historia.

The composer, Ryu Umemoto, became quite beloved in the Japan for his soundtracks to this and other games. Sadly, he passed away in 2011 at the age of 37.
