So, you know, Bethesda has made Quake I, Quake II and Quake III Arena free for some period of time during this year's QuakeCon. They did not make free Quake I and Quake II for the Zeebo ;)

With the permission of Activision, TecToy released in 2009 Quake II for the Zeebo.

Unlike the first Quake ported for the Zeebo earlier, the second game in the series had soundtrack during gameplay. The voices (including these from Stroggs) were dubbed into Brazilian Portuguese, similarly the in-game text was also translated.

The port is mostly accurate in terms of gameplay and graphics (using OpenGL engine), with some occasional slow downs, and also different controls. The mouse and the keyboard were not supported, and the precision of the joystick lacks as compared to the mouse on a PC.

Interestingly, the game has four difficulty modes, directly selectable in the menu, unlike the original Quake II for PC which had three difficulty modes, and a forth one which could only be activated in console. The difficulty modes for the Zeebo are named in Quake 4 style, namely Novato, Soldato, Tenente and Comandante.

Being programed for BREW, the final package (including 10 MB mp3 soundtrack) takes only 70 MB as compared to the PC version which is a full CD-ROM release if we count soundtrack. The BREW executable module is a big chunky 8.5 MB file, very unusual for BREW, where the executables usually do not exceed 2 MB. This also exceeds the maximum game size (25-50 MB) allowed under the Zeebo developers' guidelines. TecToy bypassed the limit by storing the .pak and the music files in a separate directory, different from the game module.
