Zing Zing Zip [ジンジンジップ] Game Sample - Arcade
Zing Zing Zip is a slightly strange, but also straightforward, vertical shooter developed by the lesser known company known as Allumer. The game was published by Tecmo, who is now known for a WIDE variety of gaming content, both as "Tecmo", and as "Koei Tecmo" (also known as "KT", Koei Tecmo is a merger between two iconic companies, Koei and Tecmo). Although Allumer does not exactly have a massive portfolio full of game projects, the company was actually founded in 1978, with the business ceasing operations in 1999. Going through their history, it would seem that Allumer would be best known for working on a couple of Gundam titles, as well as a bizarre fighting game for the Sony Playstation based loosely on the classic Chinese novel, "Journey to the West" (it is titled "Gokuu Densetsu: Magic Beast Warriors").
I can't speak for every game Allumer has made, but based on the ones I have given a look, Zing Zing Zip is actually one of the finer games the company has made and I can see why Tecmo would take an interest in it. Zany artwork aside, ZZZ is actually a pretty quality shooter that plays it "safe", being in the vein of shooters like "Raiden" from Seibu Kaihatsu. The visuals are actually quite crisp, with rich colors and plenty of nice animations and explosions that good 90s shooters should have. The game has a LOT of action...so much, to some, that it is considered a highly difficult game. The music is above average, but what is most talked about in this otherwise standard (but quality) shooter is that there are numerous funny spoken voices. Your gang will say stuff like "Jellybean!" when they grab a Jellybean bomb, "HEY HEY HEY!", "OH YEAH!" or even "OH MY GOD!", among other things. It is fine and not really an issue for some, but a bother for some others.
You get three different weapons that can be powered up by grabbing the same type you already possess repeatedly, and you get sub-missiles and of course, the powerful bombs (Jellybean bombs). On top of those things, you can use a "roll" technique to evade fire...and you will NEED to, if you are to have some luck on seeing things through to the end (or you can just use a bunch of credits, lol). The game has lots of action and lots of things explode on land, air, and sea...so if you like things exploding on land, air, and sea, this game is plenty competent and I would feel it is one of the better games to perhaps get one acquainted with Allumer, though they are also known for "Blandia", which we have a video for the PC-98 conversion, if you are interested.
