During his most recent attempt to take out the Adepti, he by accident activated the masterless visions of his dead friends. This powered him enough to keep up and actually fight against them, but as soon as he was hit, he was struck down and passed out. Rin was left in massive pain from that experience, but had managed to keep those masterless visions alive and got a hold onto them.

That was not what he wanted.
He hoped to either win or die trying. Not fail and still be alive.
This has now lead him to believe he's cursed, and alongside his delusion, he became literally delusional-
