1 Minute review Gotham Knights: It's worth playing! #gothamknights #gaming #shorts #gamingshorts
Gotham Knights definitely is not a game of the year contender, But it is something you’ll probably enjoy provided you go into it with the right mindset. First off, people should know it’s not an Arkham game. It exists in its own universe and contains absolutely no crossover ties other than a color scheme for outfits as tribute. Gotham Knights is a unique story with a unique cast of characters and its own unique gameplay.
The story beats are fun and pay homage to the source material really well. The story is complex enough to enjoy. Can it be predictable? Sometimes. Is that a bad thing? Not at all. If you’re looking for a light plot to enjoy while you relax after work, school, or on the weekends Gotham Knights does the job. I personally am a huge fan of comics (Batman especially) and I really enjoyed what they did with the characters. At first the voice acting was a little jarring for me, but grew on me during the 70 hours I put into the game. Each character has their own personal journey you can discover, and they all react to the missions and story uniquely. Overall there is certainly a lighter tone than the Arkham games, but Gotham Knights still manages to hit some very poignant notes.
The gameplay loop is enjoyable. There is no strike/counter strike system from other games like the Arkham series, rather the game plays very similarly to Spider-man PS4. There are light and heavy strikes, light and heavy ranged attacks, and a dodge you can time to open up combat opportunities. This is an equally simple combat system to the Arkham games however one can argue that it is less cinematic. The hero abilities are fun and an exciting slice to playing each character in combat. One thing I think this does very well is cultivate an experience where you really do feel like a superhero, something I actually feel this game does better than its closest competition, the Arkham games.
The open world is large and accessible, but not overly cluttered with activities. You’ll run across two different types of crimes, regular street crimes and premeditated crimes. You can fight the street crimes as you come across them and are provided with premeditated crimes presented as missions each night depending on how many clues you find. The clues system is a nice idea that is poorly implemented. You can find clues by either interrogating certain criminals or by just beating the living hell out of them. This system is an interesting concept that I want to see fleshed out in other games, not necessarily a sequel, but rather say a cop game where interrogating some perp off the street leads you to finding a kidnapping victim you would have otherwise never learned of. All that being said, free roaming and crime fighting is actually fun, rarely did I find myself becoming bored with it. The light stealth mechanics provide a viable alternative to outright fights without being overly complex or unapproachable. That being said, going in guns blazing and duking it out with violent criminals is still an awesome experience.
The customization is great, albeit light. There are several different styles of suits to collect in your gear and each has different options to personalize them. There are color patterns, and three different aesthetic options for each suit: gloves, emblem, mask, and boots. These simple options help make the characters feel like your own without sacrificing what makes them the classic comic book characters people recognize. There is even a transmog system that allows you alter any suit you’re wearing into any other suit you have unlocked. My only complaint with this system is that you are unable to change the appearance of a transmog suit.
The menus are cluttered, overwhelmingly at times, and feel like they belong in a much older game. The crafting menus get so filled up that I honestly just ignore them, only crafting the highest level or the most mod slot items. The mod menu itself gets filled quickly and takes so much time to deal with that it isn't worth it.
The side missions (with the exception of the freeze storyline, which was actually awesome) definitely feel unfinished. Some of the characters' stories like Harley and Clay face start strong but fizzle into quick beat’em up missions with no stakes. It feels like they must have run out of time to finish these plot lines in a legitimate and meaningful way. The collectible quests are very grindy and unfulfilling, I really had no reason to any unless I just happened to spot them; to call them fetch quests would be generous. The time trials are not my cup of tea, but others may well enjoy them.
