The most dangerous roads in the world do indeed have a lot to offer: yawning chasms without crash barriers, sandy and slippery slopes, sudden swelling streams, mountainsides threatened by avalanches and landslides, and crackling ice under the wheels. Here are ten of those dangerous roads around the world. So let’s begin at once.
Number 10. Austrian Road, Kazakhstan
No, this road does not link Austria to Kazakhstan. It is named after a group of Astro-Hungarian prisoners who were forced to construct it.
The construction of this road lasted for 2 years. It began in 1915, and it was finished by 1917.
It is a 37-mile road that stretches from the Bukhtarma Valley all the way to the Burkatsky pass in the Eastern part of Kazakhstan.
This route was poorly built, as it was constructed with simple tools like picks and shovels. There’s one good thing about it though, it runs through a national park, and the view of the Kara-Koba River is just awesome!
I must warn you not to get carried away by the view. It’s filled with old, rickety bridges, all thanks to irregular maintenance.
The condition of this road makes it impossible to access most times.
If it happens to be your lucky day, and the road is accessible, remember to maintain focus, as you may encounter fatal landslides.
Number 9. Route 622 (Svalvogar Road), Iceland
Iceland is a country of about 40,000 square miles and a population of about 300,000, making it a country with a very low population density. For this reason, most roads, especially the ones in wide-open areas are poorly maintained.
One such road is Route 622. Even though it gives you an excellent view of the Northwestern Icelandic coastline, it remains one of the most dangerous roads in the world.
This 13-mile road was constructed beneath very high cliffs and it cuts across Thingeyri and Lokinhanrar. This region is notorious for dangerous avalanches, powerful winds, and heavy snowfalls. It is still a popular tourist destination in Iceland, as visitors take the risk to catch a glimpse of the beautiful mountain and coastal views.
It has steep drops and a narrow, rocky track. A 4x4 SUV will be your best choice of vehicle on this road.
As for guard-rails, the 622 doesn’t have any, so drivers have to be extra careful when steering around its bends, or else their vehicles could go off the edge.
The road is closed between the months of November and April, thanks to the harsh weather conditions during this period, including heavy snow and ice.
Number 8. Taroko Gorge Road, Taiwan
When driving on this road, you will get a great view of the Taroko Gorge National Park. But that’s about as good as it gets.
This road is made up of a number of tunnels, which are dug-in on the side of a mountain along the 'Taiwanese Grand Canyon', and it links the Eastern and Western coasts of Taiwan via sharp bends and blind curves.
The paths are also very narrow, so making a sharp turn is very tricky.
There was an incident in 2012 where a driver and tourists had a narrow escape, as their bus was unable to climb an incline in the road. This forced the bus to roll backward and hit a barrier. It went down a slope and caused injuries to some of the tourists.
Another thing that makes this road so dangerous is the regular occurrence of earthquakes and typhoons. Such conditions combined with the narrow paths and sharp bends make this a difficult road to cross.
Number 7. Engineer Pass, U.S.A
Colorado is a region filled with rocks and mountains, and this is where you can find the Engineer Pass. This road sits at 3,901 meters above sea level, so drivers have to be careful to avoid driving off-road, if they do, they will be faced with a long and scary drop.
This road is filled with patches of ice, which drivers have to be on the lookout for. However, the most dangerous aspect of travelling this route is the frequent avalanches and unpredictable landslides.
Just recently, there was an unfortunate incident involving a motorcyclist who rode off the road and plunged to his death.
American road-trips are among the best you can experience in the world, but driving along the Engineer Pass is far from the most enjoyable.
A narrow 4-wheel drive vehicle is the best choice for driving along this road. Also, every driver with intentions of passing this route has to maintain a high level of focus and skill to meet the demands of this dangerous terrain.
