Reboots! Hollywood loves them. Audiences love them - mostly. Critics often don’t love them. Bean counters REALLY love them. Disney, Warner Bros, 20th Century Fox, Amazon, Marvel, DC - nobody is immune to the siren song of the rebooted franchise. Slap a new coat of paint on an existing IP and - hopefully - watch the receipts roll in.
The first instance of the Hollywood reboot was arguably legendary jungle swinger Tarzan - first adapted as a silent picture in 1918, it was then rebooted (though that term was not coined until decades later) in 1932 for a 12-film series that ran until the end of the 1940s. It was then rebooted again in the 1950s! And of course since then we’ve seen a Disney musical version with Oscar-winning songs, and more live-action interpretations, including 2016’s The Legend of Tarzan - nearly 100 years after the first version! Now there’s a franchise with some longevity.
That’s the thing about reboots - if you’ve done it successfully once, there’s every incentive to do it again. From superheroes to super spies to sci-fi action heroes, if somebody owns your intellectual property and makes a profit off it once, the balance of probability is that some executive is hoping lightning will strike twice. Or three times. Or four times.
And that’s what we’re discussing in today’s video - 10 movie franchises that have been rebooted not just once, but multiple times. Some of them are very recent - some of them less so...
