10 Things You Didn’t Know About Lost (in text form)
10. There is an episode in Season 2 of Lost entitled Everybody Hates Hugo where Hurley is in the Hatch’s food storage room eating food. After stuffing his face with food, he chugs some milk from a carton. One the other side of that carton is a picture of Walt.
9. Originally, Jack was going to be played by Michael Keaton. He was going to be killed by the smoke monster instead of the pilot when they found the cockpit of the plane. Kate would have then become the de facto leader of the survivors instead of Jack. By that point in the series, it would have been clear to viewers that Jack was the hero of the series. ABC told the shows producers that the hero shouldn’t do so soon. As a result of that change, Michael Keaton backed out of the show, as he had gone into it thinking he wouldn’t be a main cast member throughout the series.
8. It was revealed on the Official Lost Podcast that DHARMA is actually a backronym and stands for Department of Heuristics and Research of Material Applications. For those who don’t know, a backronym is similar to an acronym. A backronym is made of a pre-existing phrase. In this case, what DHARMA actually stands for was created after DHARMA was created.
7. In the 16th episode of Season 6, Across The Sea, a young Man in Black is sitting on the beach and is looking at a turtle in the water. Mother walks approaches him and eventually sits next to him. When the camera pans out, which was only seconds later, the turtle was gone. Godspeed, turtle.
6. If you’ve watched the series many times you may have noticed this. At the start of most episodes is a voiceover that says “Previously on Lost”. The first character shown after that is who is the central character of that episode, or who the flashbacks are about in early episodes.
5. Vincent was played by two dogs. The first was a female lab named Madison. The second was named Pono, and was a male dog.
4. Sawyer was originally going to be an older, hair slicked back style con man from New York. Josh Holloway, who played Sawyer, got upset during an audition, kicked a chair and loudly swore in frustration. The reportedly liked the edge Holloway showed, and changed Sawyer to into a Southern con man.
3. There are many characters in Lost who get their names from influential people throughout history. Among them are Daniel Faraday, who gets his name from Michael Faraday who studied electromagnetism and electrochemistry. John Locke was named after John Locke, a 17th century philosopher and physician who is often called the "Father of Liberalism”. Jeremy Bentham, the alias Locke uses when he leaves the island, is also the name of an English philosopher who is considered the be the founder of utilitarianism.
2. Early on in development for the 6th season, it was intended for Iliana to be Jacob’s daughter instead of just being one of his protectors. The writers dropped this idea because they didn’t have enough time left in the series to explain how she was Jacob’s daughter.
Bonus fact: because why not. In the 11th episode of Season 4, Cabin Fever, it is revealed that John Locke was born in 1956. The episode starts with a woman, who turns out to be Locke’s mother, dancing in her room listening to music. The song Everyday by Buddy Holly can be heard playing in the background, however, that song wasn’t released until 1957.
1. When Mother performs a ritual with Jacob to make him the protector of the island, she mutters something in latin. Thousands of years later, Jacob performs the same ritual with Jack and also mutters something in latin. When translated, it says “Because we don't accept this as a simple potion, but so that he shall be as one with me”
