A playthrough of the hidden character Sindel in the PS2 version of Midway’s/Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat Deception.

If you can’t quite remember who Sindel is, the following clip will tell you all you need to know about her: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MIt0VY7Yg2w

Sindel is a relatively important character to the series, but like so many elements she was basically shoved into the background for a while after MK3, before being properly brought back in the reboot series.

Sindel is more or less the replacement for Kitana here, which isn’t too surprising when you consider that that Sindel is her mother, and Kitana has been captured by Onaga in this game. Her banshee scream attack functions just like Kitana’s fan lift did back in MKDA, and in terms of special moves she otherwise only has a basic projectile attack, as well as a bizarre command grab where she slides in, grabs the opponent feet and then kicks them away. Combo-wise she is really damn good, mainly because both her martial arts and weapons styles having combos with launching finishes, which allow her to deal even more damage in a juggle combo if she can time it just right. Like many characters across these two games, Sindel is relatively basic yet still feels fleshed-out enough to be a viable character. Simply having a trap special attack makes her a significantly easier character to use than most, and the fact that her fighting styles are quite rapid and fluid makes her one of the better characters to use, in my experience. Certainly, a great addition to the game.

The Onaga fight went surprisingly well this time. As with Moloch, Onaga is quite slow, meaning that any characters will particularly fast combos can potentially just wail on him until death, occasionally blocking here and there if need be. As I’ve mentioned a bit before, timing attacks in this game can be pretty difficult, especially as most moves have a slight recovery period after they finish, which can take a little time to get used to. That’s an important thing to bring up actually; the 3D MK games really do help to show why 3D fighting games stick to certain ideas, and why 2D ones stick to others. The heavier nature of a 3D fighter means that it’s just not as prone to quick combos or projectiles, as they don’t fully work with the slower nature of a 3D title, where everything has a period of wind-up and rest after its executing. What I’m basically trying to say is that actions tend to be instantaneous in a 2D fighter, while they usually have a bit of wind-up before taking back in a 3D fighter, as well as a small period of time before the player can input another command. 3D and 2D fighters both require different methods in order to play them, which is where the 3D MK games get a bit weird as it often combines 2D fighting game elements such as quick combos and projectiles with 3D elements such as manual blocking, encircling the opponent and weighted movement and attacks in general. It’s certainly unique, I must say, and definitely a fascinating oddity as far as fighting games go, though it's definitely one of the weirder series to get back into.

This isn’t the last time we’ll see Sindel either, although it will be a fair while until we see her again.

Next up, it’s another replacement character of sorts.
