#1093 Mortal Kombat Deception (PS2) Hidden Characters (6/11): Jade playthrough.
A playthrough of the hidden character Jade in the PS2 version of Midway’s/Netherrealm’s Mortal Kombat Deception.
Jade wasn’t bad in classic MK (on the contrary, in UMK3 she was pretty much broken) but she wasn’t as interesting as she could be. The 3D MK games change this by making her into a significantly more fleshed out, interesting character.
I actually go with her classic (klassic, if you will) outfit in this video. All characters have an alternate outfit such as this, with many of them actually being a lot better than their redesign. Again, nice to have the option I must say, as it allowed them to experiment while still retaining classic elements, to please fans both old and new. And while Jade’s original costume isn’t bad, her classic one is just a bit more iconic.
I previously covered Jade all the way back in MK2. Like Noob and Smoke she was a hidden boss in that game, which makes MKDeception a bit of a reunion, something which will also happen when I get to the MK reboot series. Jade was badass (if a touch broken) in MK2, given that she not only had the insane AI of her hidden boss counterparts, but was also immune to projectiles, making her a beast as bosses go. The irony as well was that despite being the easiest boss to reach, she was easily the most difficult to fight. Well, at least until you work out that Jump Back + Uppercut method for her, then she’s hilariously easy. Funny how the most difficult AIs from that era always had some stupidly easy workaround.
To put it simply, Jade absolutely rocks. In terms of special moves, she has a teleportation move akin to Raiden’s. And considering it teleports behind the opponent, well, you can simply move towards the edge of an arena, let your opponent walk towards you, then teleport behind them and knock them clear off the edge. Emphasis on edge. Nothin’ personal, indeed. She seems to have inherited Johnny Cage’s charge kick, which is incredibly useful as a poke move, and she has a generic projectile like so many other characters. She also has her buff move where she glows green temporarily, but I couldn’t quite figure out what that did; presumably it’s the temporary invincibility thing she had in UMK3.
In terms of combos, goddamn, Jade is almost a little too good. Her regular martial arts styles hit fast and hard for considerable damage, knocking off health pretty damn quickly, but where she really shines is her weapon style. (Triangle, Square) x2. Two-hit move which knocks the opponent into the air, and then hits them twice more. For a total of 33% damage. 33%. For one of the easiest combos to input in the entire game. It’s kind of insane, really, as it means that Jade is ludicrously all-round as a character, being able to keep her distance and damage with pokes if she wants to, or to go all out into a combo-frenzy if she so desires. Hell, the fact that this playthrough is so much shorter than the rest is a testament to how good she really is. A damn good inclusion, and a really well-done remake of a classic MK character.
Her ending is weird as fuck though, which seems to be a bit of a running theme for this game.
Speaking of which, her ending is vaguely relevant to the next video. We will be seeing Jade in the future, though not for a fair while yet.
